Is RuneScape 3 Free to Play?
Free-to-play, often abbreviated as F2P, refers to the no-cost version of RuneScape where players are not required to make any payments to Jagex in order to play. Players who engage with the free version of RuneScape 3 are commonly referred to as “free players,” “F2Ps,” or “non-members.” This stands in contrast to members, who pay a fee either with real-world currency or through bonds purchased with in-game currency, granting access to a significantly expanded map and a wide array of skills, items, quests, and activities that are not available to free-to-play users.
Free-to-Play in RuneScape: An Overview
Jagex describes the free-to-play portion of RuneScape as offering approximately 5,000 hours of skills to train in order to reach the maximum level of 99. Conversely, the members’ version is viewed as the expansion edition. While there is no time limit imposed on free players, they are only able to access about 20% of the content available in RuneScape. However, free players have the option to upgrade to a membership at any time by paying a fee, thereby unlocking additional skills, locations, items, and more.
Historically, the free-to-play version of RuneScape was the only iteration available prior to the introduction of members and the subsequent development of RuneScape 2. The introduction of pay-to-play servers by Jagex was intended to benefit the entire RuneScape community.
In terms of gameplay, the majority of new updates within RuneScape are typically restricted to pay-to-play members, with the exception of updates related to graphics or the introduction of new servers. Upon announcing the members service, Jagex acknowledged that the free version would not receive updates as frequently as it had in the past.
